Gnusman53: "after the GOP crashed the economy, all credit froze..." ROTFL! Now there's a totally baseless statement. Gnusman53, I'm guessing you have little or no experience when it comes to financial/investment matters. Am I correct? BTW, investing in mutual funds doesn't count as real investment experience.
"As to why not selling more" That's because the Volt has smaller capacity (strictly 4 seater and less trunk space) compared to it's rivals, and yet it's price is higher. The potential cost savings from less gasoline usage will take a long time, in most cases, to pay off the higher cost differential.

Clermont40miles, LOL, you obviously hit the liberals nerves! Great post!
None have answer for this:
Comparing Volt to an F-250 and an Escalade? REALLY?
Try this: Total cost to own a Honda Accord for 5 years $41,219 Sticker price for a Honda Accord 2012 LX Premium $23,180.
And you'll get a lot more car with the Honda Accord.
Some people will do most anything to prop up this joke called the Volt.

Some of the issue is probably... "I'm talking about what I know." and "I don't know what the VOLT really is..." so if it's more expensive then a regular ICE vehicle and means I have to install a charger in my Garage or run an extension cord to it once and a while... well that's so inconvenient.
Plus, Somehow people complain about "Coal" (Dirty Power Plants) but don't seem to have any problem with all the "Vampire" Devices living in their homes... not to mention forgetting to turn off the Lights/Fans when not in a room. Add to that lame ideas like US Senator Tom Coburn "hoarding" 100 Watt light bulbs because he somehow can't "see" with an alternative bulb.
Poor guy hasn't heard of newer LED light fixtures/bulbs while a bit expensive up front but perform almost identically to an Incandescent Bulb (Dimmable, Full Spectrum Incandescent Bright light) saves MEGA money by using virtually no power and can last for Decades.
Barring that Senator Coburn doesn't realize that there are newer Incandescent Bulbs replacing the traditional 100Watt etc. that use less power while still provide that "Traditional" feel.
Until people realize the Volt is just another example of the Future and let go of the old ways... Hybrids like the Volt will remain expensive and less adopted then the "Popular" choice... not because it's "better" but because it's what you "know".

I'd still buy a Fusion hybrid before a Volt. I believe they're cheaper.

gatekeepertwo - Excellent question. If conservatives are so patriotic, why do they promote dependence on foreign oil sources, instead of promoting conservation and development of new sources of energy that will strengthen this country?
Or is it just that they can't stand that a Democratic president might get some of the credit?
Though us4usa also has some good points. Why is GM apparently so incompetent at designing decent cars anymore? Maybe they need to get rid of ALL of their top management.
clermont40miles - "EV's trade oil burning to coal burning. With the greenie EPA shutting down coal fired power plants, the price and availability for electric power will "necessarily skyrocket."
Except that we've got plentiful and cheap natural gas to replace coal. Not to mention solar, wind and other renewable sources.
Not to mention that the Volt is a hybrid, not a pure electric. So its range is only limited by the amount of gas in its tank, just like any standard car.

Maybe clermont has heard about something called the sun. Solar arrays have been used to power up EVs for awhile now.....
About five years ago I remember seeing a retiree convert a VW bug to be an EV..... and use a solar array to recharge it..... AND THAT was in Seattle.
And in some places, the primary source of power is hydroelectric....
Some electric utilities are even offering the choice of power generated from renewable sources......

As to why not selling more...... easy.... after the GOP crashed the economy, all credit froze... (and that includes credit for buying a car).... it is just starting to barely loosen..... but credit is still a big problem...
Simply, car purchases have been like a hose with someone parking a car ontop..... water still comes out of the hose.....but not as much as there should if the car wasn't on the hose.....
BTW, Caddys and Corvettes cost more... than the Volt.

So far, there has been no "spontaneous" ignitions/fires in a Volt on the road.
ONLY reported cases are in a holding lot after the Volt was TOTALLED in crash tests.......

The discussion has been very rich.
The Fox News bashing brought to you by Clean Technica, Think Progress and Climate Progress -- and supported here by the same.
EV's trade oil burning to coal burning. With the greenie EPA shutting down coal fired power plants, the price and availability for electric power will "necessarily skyrocket."
EV's are totally incapable of replacing internal combustion engines cost effectively on a large scale. They are specialty cars. The price and limitations are clear for those who choose to see.
The emperor has no clothes.
Green is red.

The odd fact is they only sold 7,xxx , if this car is that great one would think it should sell... Sure you can say Fox is to blame, but there are more fox haters then 7,xxx supporting the volt... The numbers do not add up, lets say EVeryone that likes fox , votes Red or lives in a red state hates the volt... Then look at EVeryone that haters fox votes blue or lives in a blue state loves the volt... So where are all the lovers and supporters for the volt, not at the dealers buying them???
Maybe this car is so great its not ready for prime time???
Next year only 7,xxx out of MILLIONS of people, why???
What could it be???
Look at some facts about this car. $39K and up four seater 35 miles EV range 32 MPG gas Premium gas required
If the goal is to go green... Toyota Prius "V" REGULAR gas $26-$29K MPG 41... EV LEAF 90 mile range $35-37K... And screw OPEC I'm all in...

I had a similar question as Bob Lutz who is responsible for the Chevy Volt. Why do conservatives think it is a liberal idea to get away from the jerks in the Middle East and in Venezuela who like bashing us while gouging us with high prices? It should be that whatever makes America great and independent is conservative. The knock against liberal ideology is that it favors policies that reduce independence and reduce the motivation to get off of handouts. So if we make better non-gas vehicles in the future is that not a conservative idea?

I too am tired of all the criticism for the Chevy Volt Like the article states Design was started long before obama was elected The tax credit was approved while G.W. Bush was in office put in The GM bailout was approved while G.W. Bush was in office The Volt is not for everybody and it is overpriced But as a second car for a family for commuting to work and school it can suffice Hopefully the price will come down and the range will increase and I am a conservative who voted for G.W.Bush and I did not vote nor will I vote for Obama But lets stick to facts and stop the name calling etc The far left screams this then the far right screams that and nothing gets done

Here is a shocker: Greens in Clean Technica blast Fox . .
There is a lot to be said here about how they twist numbers by comparing apples to oranges . . 5 year cost of volt verus a heavy duty pickup truck . .
. . . besides the point of the 5 year cost comparisson line . . just about when the batteries will need to be replaced (3 to 5 year life?) . . .some estimates come in as high as $10,000 to replace batteries in an electric vehicle!
Yep - buyer beware.
I'm sure it will work for some folks - just watch the maintenance costs. . . Good luck!

“Recent science supports the conclusion that oil is a naturally renewing resource. How many dinosaurs do you think there WERE anyway?”
Oh my, I suppose this comes from another devotee of Faux Noise. There is extremely limited scientific support for abiotic oil, which is probably what is being referred to here. Oil is derived from ancient plant material, as is coal. Although an occasional dinosaur might be in the mix, animal carcases are not a significant source of oil.

Livedream - "Amusing article --
Even better is the logical and honest observation by GreenAstro --
"Escalade 5 Year Total Cost to Own $76,001 F-250 5 year Total Cost to Own $57,529 Volt 5 year Total Cost to Own $40,444
So, you are shortsighted if all you look at is the initial cost of the car, for the 5 years that most people own a car the Volt is cheaper. ========================== What load of bull feathers! LOL. Comparing Volt to an F-250 and an Escalade? REALLY?

agr964: us4usa - You can't compare the cost of a car to an SUV or truck. They are totally different vehicles that serve different purposes. It's like justifying the cost effectiveness of a truck by saying it costs less to own than a bus.
Compared to the 5-year cost other similar vehicles, the volt is at best, a wash (until it comes time to replace the batteries).
If you read GreenAstro post that is what he/she did???
You could say the truck cost us money, I say the truck makes us money, the SUV saves us money...
