Industry Groups Reiterate Call to Suspend Hydraulic Fracturing Rulemaking

Rig Zone -- The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and the Western Energy Alliance (WEA) submitted a letter Monday to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, seeking a meeting to discuss the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) proposed rule for hydraulic fracturing on federal and Indian lands.

"The Bureau of Land Management's proposed rule on hydraulic fracturing of wells on federal and Indian lands is unnecessary, excessive and requires actions that no state currently regulating oil and gas production deems necessary, based on their decades of regulatory experience," said IPAA and WEA in the letter.

Keep those regulations in place until we can trust these corporations to do the right thing (which will happen when hell freezes over).

While shale and fracking have been around for some time, the aggressive nature of current fracking and the substantial evidence that energy companies are willing to risk the lives and welfare of the people living near fracking activity is well documented. Big Oil, has always been disposed to believe that their welfare is the welfare of the country despite the concerns of those whose lives are affect by their operations. As for IPA's claim that states throughout their history of regulating fracking operations have not "deemed" actions proposed by the Bureau of Land Management as necessary, what we have here is pure flatulence. A state legislature can be compromised by an industry that has the money to buy off key legislators. Keeping the federal government out of these issues is common sense because it's much easier to buy off a legislature or two than it is to buy off the whole country though they are continually trying. And when they succeed as they did during the Bush administration, we have things like the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The federal government has the responsibility to protect the welfare of the US citizen from corporate greed as it has many, many times before. It also has the resources necessary to determine what safety issues need to be resolved before operations can commence or continue. Most Americans want cheap energy and they want government to get involved in corporate affairs only as much as necessary. Fine. But with environmentally sensitive issues like fracking, the need for care is evident and this is something the Hard Right will dispense with first because the welfare of Corporate America is more important to them than the welfare of the US citizen. The extraction industries have resisted every environmental law ever enacted under one guise or another. Having worked in or around oil and mining industries for 20 years I've learned to trust nothing they say.
