EU Energy Chief Committed to Opening Southern Corridor

Dow Jones Newswires --
Europe remains committed to plans to build a pipeline to bring gas from the Caspian Sea region to Europe, European Union energy chief Guenther Oettinger said Monday.

Mr. Oettinger spoke at a press conference ahead of a meeting in Vienna today of representatives from the Azerbaijan gas consortium, Shah Deniz II, and the Nabucco West pipeline consortium.

The pipeline is one of two proposals for bringing natural gas from the Caspian Sea region to Europe via Austria. The second line would bring the gas via Italy, also along a so-called southern corridor.

"We are very determined that the corridor will be opened," the EU energy commissioner said.

He said that both pipeline concepts were good and that no matter which proposal succeeds, the pipeline will be European.

The unstated reason for the Europeans to want a southern corridor natural gas pipeline is that it will not be supplied with Russian natural gas nor will it run through any Russian territory. The proposed southern pipeline will provide a hedge against the Russians cutting Central and Western Europe off from 25% of their normal natural gas supply should new contract disputes arise.

there shuold be no reason why government should impose a cap on gas in Europe (Germany ) if you figure in USD you would be paying approx. 8.00 a gallon of gas .. and we have something to complain about ..

Europe faces issues similar to our own, and their prices are considerably higher. Their cars require 95 octane fuel, higher than our premium.

European's are often slow to change, but I'll bet they have their pipeline up and running long before the US gets it's Keystone pipeline finished...if it ever gets finished !

Obama and his cronies couldn't get this done. EPA, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, environmentalists, liberal friends etc.. etc.. would all have to be appeased and would take forever.
